UDS has wrapped up and we got some good feedback from the Ubuntu TV UDS session as well as made some goals for 13.04.

The format of the weekly updates is changing. First, the weekly updates will no longer be weekly. They will be as often as progress allows (when there is news, it will be here). Second, the weekly updates will no longer contain all of the information from the previous week. You’ve told us that it is hard to read/see what is new, and we’ve listened. Starting today, the new format will only contain information that is new since the previous update. We’ll continue to have the old format on a different page, so it’s still easy to see the status of everything, but updates to that page may be less often.

As I mentioned earlier, we’ve set some goals for 13.04. If you have reviewed the work items below, you can see we’re quite ambitious for the upcoming development cycle. If you would like to assist in any of the work items (or you have other things you’d like to work on) you can usually find the person working on the work item (the nick listed in [ ] ) in our IRC channel ( #ubuntu-tv ) on irc.freenode.net. You can also post any questions or comments on the Ubuntu TV mailing list: ubuntu-tv@lists.launchpad.net

Work Items:
[mhall119] Setup communication between community and Unity dev team
[mhall119] Setup weekly meetings and announce on ML
[mhall119] Make a new TV development branch based on Unity trunk
[mhall119] Coordinate Unity API changes necessary to support TV
[bobweaver] Implement TV Launcher
[bobweaver] Implement TV Dash
[bobweaver] Implement Program Guide CategoryRenderer
[bobweaver] Implement TV HUD
[bobweaver] Implement TV Indicators
[popey] Ask about creating regular ISOs from TV PPA and hosting
[tgm4883] Define what lenses and scopes will be used
[tgm4883] Define what data needs to be passed between Scopes and Renderers
[tgm4883] Build DVR lens
[tgm4883] Build lens for guide data
[tgm4883] Build scope for guide data from mythtv
[tgm4883] Extend the current mythtv scope (and have it use the DVR lens)
[tgm4883] Extend the mythtv services api python file to interface with all of the mythtv services
[tgm4883] Get some mythtv API services added upstream
[foxbuntu] Documentation/guide for installing/configuring mythtv-backend
[unassigned] Settings lens

You can always find the progress of individual work items in the Ubuntu TV Blueprint

Thanks,

Your Ubuntu TV team

The Ubuntu TV team would like to formally announce a call for the TV community to take a more active role in helping and leading the direction and implementation of the TV project. There are three specific ways that the community can help the project with immediately:

Re-creating the TV user interface using the Nux toolkit (Unity 3D) instead of Qt/QML (Unity 2D).

Integrating a full MythTV backend into the TV UI, meaning live TV tuning (EPG) and recording infrastructure.

Researching and finalizing the hardware acceleration of GStreamer video sinks for nVidia, Intel and AMD graphic cards. This not only will enable the TV to have hardware accelerated video playback, but also anything on the Ubuntu desktop that is built using GStreamer.

When / Where

Work can begin immediately, but know that more details will be discussed at the upcoming UDS in Copenhagen. If you’re at UDS, please attend the session. If you can’t make it in person, feel free to attend the session remotely.

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/community-r-tv-development

The design specification used to create the prototype shown at CES is being provided to guide the re-creating in Unity 3D and Nux. Following this spec will ensure that the community’s efforts are inline with Canonical’s goals, and will ultimately be merged into upstream Unity.

A lot of work is going on for the Ubuntu TV project. This weekly update aims to be a place to receive information on what has changed in the different areas of the project. It also hopes to engage the community and show in what areas anyone can get involved. Check back each week for an update on the project’s status.

New: Changes since last week are in bold.

Current Status (subject to change)

General

Since the 12.10 cycle is past feature freeze, most teams have switched to bug fixing as new features are no longer accepted this cycle.

Nux

An OpenGL toolkit used by Unity (including Ubuntu TV) to draw and render the launcher, Dash and HUD.

Unity 3D transition status

Since Unity 2D is deprecated for Ubuntu 12.10, much work is being done to port Ubuntu TV to Unity 3D. Much of this work is included in the 12.10 Ubuntu desktop. Currently the transition is approximately 60% complete.

For TV’s Unity, launchers no longer track the status of applications, nor will the associated lenses be loaded

Lenses/scopes

Undecided, but probably what you would expect from a media center: Video, Music, DVR, Pictures

Work on lenses/scopes benefits all Unity (that’s the joy of Unity), so improvements for one area are seen across all form factors.

Accepting recommendations on scopes from the community

The TV team is hard at work helping to implement the Unity Previews user experience for 12.10 which will directly benefit the TV UI.

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/08/say-hello-to-unitys-newest-feature-previews

Give the latest Unity Previews code a try (requires Unity 6.2 and Ubuntu 12.10): https://launchpad.net/~unity-team/+archive/staging

Jim Hodapp has committed (revision 57) his video preview work to the remote-videos trunk branch for unity-lens-video

Metadata

Metadata (from videos, music files, images, etc) will be read into a fully indexed backend which is continually updated based on monitored file system changes.

Will use Grilo framework to get metadata into Ubuntu TV as well as provide a consistent API to query and retrieve metadata

Grilo plugin for TMDB has been committed upstream and is available in the 0.2.2 release of Grilo (check the PPA).

Use the Grilo test GUI to experiment with the plugin

Community members can use the TMDB as a template to contribute other metadata provider plugins (such as TTVDB)

Community member contributions

Ubuntu TV Testcard (Thomas Mashos) is awaiting review to get into the official repos. To try it out now, a deb is available for install. Please provide feedback on the Ubuntu TV mailing list.

Community lenses and scopes made for Unity should require little or no modification for Ubuntu TV. We look forward to seeing more awesome community contributions.

Mythbuntu developer Thomas Mashos has been working on a MythTV scope for the videos lens. Currently still working on how TV episodes will be presented. Movies will be presented like this.

Jim is working on an example application that demonstrates live metadata searching using Nux to render the UI

This is the beginning of the place to experiment with metadata retrieval from Unity which will set the stage for what Ubuntu TV metadata retrieval will look like for the product in general

The basic app is working and can go public once an internal library that it uses is publicly released

Remote controls

Michał continues work on remote control integration

The current plan is to have remote button presses appear like regular keystrokes

UDS-R – 13.04(Copenhagen, Denmark)

October 29th – November 1st

Ubuntu TV sessions being planned (check the client track) and will be publicly posted before UDS begins (most likely in the next few weeks)

Ubuntu TV work expected to ramp up during this cycle as Unity 3D transition should be finished

Sponsorship invites were sent out September 4th. If you did not receive an invite we encourage you to register and participate remotely (also, check your SPAM folder as it’s been known to show up there)

Help wanted

If you want to get involved, please leave us a comment below so multiple people aren’t working independently on the same things.

Accepting any Grilo plugins to retrieve online metadata (see Writing plugins for Grilo)

Advanced: accepting a C++ binding for Grilo

Look at grilomm for a start of a C++ binding. Needing someone to complete this work.

We’ve already seen some awesome things done with Previews (such as the Wikipedia and Photos Previews by David Callé). Would really like to see what people can do to take advantage of the new Previews framework, specifically in a TV context.

Please join #ubuntu-tv on irc.freenode.net to discuss if you’re interested in either of these two areas of help

Get involved

Ubuntu TV weekly updates are not dead!
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve released a weekly update. Please be aware that this does not mean the Ubuntu TV project has stopped working. As Ubuntu TV isn’t being released with the 12.10 release cycle, much of the focus right now is ironing out Unity bugs and finishing the Unity 3D transition. We didn’t feel this warranted a weekly update as it isn’t exactly newsworthy. Rest assured that when there is newsworthy items again, this will be the first place to find them. Keep calm and carry on.

Current Status (subject to change)

General

Since the 12.10 cycle is past feature freeze, most teams have switched to bug fixing as new features are no longer accepted this cycle.

Metadata

Metadata (from videos, music files, images, etc) will be read into a fully indexed backend which is continually updated based on monitored file system changes.

Will use Grilo framework to get metadata into Ubuntu TV as well as provide a consistent API to query and retrieve metadata

Grilo plugin for TMDBhas been written. Commit to Grilo upstream is waiting upstream approval

Accepting any Grilo plugins to retrieve online metadata (see Writing plugins for Grilo)

This weekly update aims to be a place to receive information on what has changed in the different areas of the project.
Changes since last week

Unity 2D has been removed. Unity 3D is the future, and it is now. What this means for Ubuntu TV is that the foundation is in place. There are aspects of the TV UI that still need to be ported to Unity 3D.
